Mill knives are used in the manufacture of rubber sheets, which are used in the final assembly of many different items such as tires and hoses. Typically the blades are very sharp and, made of higher-grade tool steel, which enables a long run life. Generally the M series of High Speed steel is used in creating a durable mill knife, and often a better grade than just the entry M-2 version of tool steel. Designers used many shapes and sizes of mill knives to affect the desired cuts in the products. It is important that the cutting edges are very sharp and hold up over a long cutting life in the cutting of these very abrasive substances.
